Hosts Tameside College top skills competition

Tameside College has hosted an annual skills competition for students across Greater Manchester.

The college hosted the Greater Manchester College’s (GMC) construction skills competition on Thursday (23 March).

Students from colleges across Greater Manchester took part in the competition which included plumbing, electrical, joinery, painting and decorating and brickwork.

Each student was tasked with using the skills they have learnt during their studies to complete a series of tasks and were judged on their accuracy, attention to detail and technical ability.

Tameside College were awarded overall first place in the competition, with Bury College claiming second and Hopwood Hall College and Stockport College joint third place.

The construction skills competition forms a part of the GMC’s annual skills competitions, which include a range of subject areas such as hair and beauty, business and hospitality. These aim to raise the profile of technical education in Greater Manchester and inspire students to pursue their future career paths. These serve as a feeder to the WorldSkills UK competitions, in which the college recently saw success; with one gold medal and two silver in restaurant service and mechatronics respectively.

Jackie Moores, principal and CEO of Tameside College, said: “We are delighted to have hosted the construction skills competition for the nine greater Manchester colleges who are committed to fulfilling the skills gaps in Greater Manchester. The standard of work has been exemplary from all participants, as noted by our judges, employers and staff who attended today.

"These competitions are very much about taking part, developing, and perfecting your chosen skill. I am delighted for students and staff at the college that we were overall winner and recognise the amazing efforts of all the colleges who took part today. Congratulations.”

Dean Donelon, head of department for construction at Tameside College, said: “Our students performed exceptionally during the competition and represented the college professionally. I am really pleased for them and the college that we took the overall prize and would like to thank every student from across all GM colleges for taking part. Well done.”

The competition was sponsored Greenmount Projects Ltd, who donated £5,000 for competition materials and equipment.

Competing colleges were: Manchester College, Oldham College, Hopwood Hall College, Bolton College, Bury College, Stockport College, Wigan and Leigh and Tameside College.
