Joy as Copley students receive GCSE results

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

This years cohort of GCSE students headed to their schools to pick up their results this morning, albeit under very different circumstances than usual.

However, there was a reassuring air of familiarity with smiling students, happy parents and delighted teachers.

At Copley Academy in Stalybridge, students filtered in from 10am to collect their results in a socially distanced manner, before celebrating with their friends and families outside.

Isabelle Moores said she was worried when she saw how the government had handled A Level results day, but was relieved after opening that envelope. She said: “I didn’t think I get any of this and when the A level news came out and it wasn’t good I had a complete meltdown. I’m really happy with it now.”

After a strong performance, she’s now off to Ashton Sixth Form.

Her mum added: “I am very proud of her and its just what she deserves as well.

“She’s worked really hard for it and I’m absolutely over the moon for her. She’s been really worked up she has, she’s been really stressed but she’s happy now and that’s all that matters.

“All that stress is forgotten now because of the smile on her face that says it all.”

Katie Hilton, from Stalybridge, is also off to Ashton Sixth Form to study psychology, sociology and health and social care in September. She said: “I’m really happy with what I’ve done.

“Because of the uncertainty we didn’t know what was happening.

“I’ll miss the people here, my friends, more than anything.”

Her mum was pleased to see five years of hard work pay off. She said: “I’m really proud, she’s gotten what she needs so its job done as far as Im concerned.

“We’d been listening to the news and the uncertainty had been horrendous but she’s got what she needs. She’s on the excel course at college so yeah, a job well done Katie.”

Anna Harding scored exceptionally well but said she’d have liked to have seen what she could’ve achieved if she’d sat the exams. “I’ve done fine” she said.

“I could’ve done a bit better if id have sat my exams but I'll take it because I can't do anything about it.

“Maybe all the stress has meant I’ve done better in some subjects but not others.

“It was stressful for the past week until we got the u turn. Before that I was fine because I did revise for my mocks so I was ok.

“I did the best I could in my mocks so theres nothing I could do once I’d left school really.”

With an early end to their school year, students missed out on so many milestones including prom and that final day at school, something which Anna says was gutting.
“Im gutted but we’ll get another prom somewhere sometime. We move on and we’ll go to college and do some of the stuff there.”

Denton’s Tyler Holloway says that he feels he’s cheated to get his results after not sitting the tests.

He said: “I’ve passed most of them. Failed on a few but its enough to get onto the course.

“It’s been boring at home, we didn’t really get the experience we could’ve got and I feel like I’ve cheated with the test. I didn’t take it so we’ve got results we shouldn’t have. But it’s ok, I’m happy with it.”

Tyler is now off to Clarendon College to study photography.

Today also marked interim principal Mr Paddy’s last day, as he steps aside. He said he was incredibly proud of everything the year 11’s had achieved: “They’ve been incredibly resilient and they’ve done a fantastic job in securing good results for themselves, they were a fantastic year group anyway so we were expecting - because of their hard work - that they would get good results and thats exactly whats happened. The school is in a really strong position now, we’ve had a couple of really good Ofsted reports, so it’s been reflected in their hard work and the schools transitional progress.

Incredibly proud of them. I’m only here for a year but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed that year and enjoyed working with the parents, teachers and students because they are fantastic. I wish them the very best for the future.”
